UK insolvency data: CSV downloads and JSON API

The figures behind our UK company insolvency tracker are free to download as CSV or to read as JSON. They are plain static files, so there is no key to request, no sign-up and no rate limit. The current files hold the Insolvency Service's August 2026 release, published 18 September 2026: 1,946 company insolvencies in England and Wales in August 2026, and 50.1 per 10,000 companies over the 12 months. The data is Crown Copyright under the Open Government Licence, so you can reuse it as long as you credit the Insolvency Service. Insolvency Service, gov.uk

Data as of: August 2026 release, published 18 September 2026 · Next official release due 20 October 2026 · Schema version 1.

The files

All five sit next to the tracker page and are rebuilt from the same data, so a figure in a CSV always matches the one on the page.

Quick start

Pull the headline figures from the command line:

curl -s https://ltdturnaround.co.uk/data/uk-company-insolvency-tracker/latest.json | jq '.headline'

Load the monthly series into pandas:

import pandas as pd

monthly = pd.read_csv("https://ltdturnaround.co.uk/data/uk-company-insolvency-tracker/monthly.csv")
print(monthly[["month", "total", "cvls"]])

Or into Excel or Google Sheets, which will refresh it on demand:

Data > Get Data > From Web, then paste:
https://ltdturnaround.co.uk/data/uk-company-insolvency-tracker/monthly.csv

In Google Sheets the equivalent is =IMPORTDATA("https://ltdturnaround.co.uk/data/uk-company-insolvency-tracker/monthly.csv"). The last two rows of monthly.csv currently read:

latest.json

One document with every table above, keyed in camelCase. source says which release you have and links to it, headline carries the England and Wales total, the prior-month and year-earlier totals, the 12-month rate per 10,000 companies and the "1 in" figure, and files lists the CSV URLs. Each procedure has a shareBasis of published or calculated, the same as the CSV. Check schemaVersion: it only goes up if a field is renamed or removed, and new fields can appear without it changing.

How and when the files change

The Insolvency Service publishes company insolvency statistics monthly; the next release is due 20 October 2026. Our fetcher reads each new release's commentary and Excel tables, validates them, and the files here are rebuilt from that when the site is next published. So there can be a short gap after a release before these files move on. The release column in every CSV, and source.published in the JSON, tell you exactly which release you are looking at.

Each release revises earlier months, and these files only ever hold the latest release's view. If you need a history of how a month was first reported, keep your own copy of each month's files; the release column makes them safe to stack. For a full back series, use the Insolvency Service's own Excel tables.

Read the figures with care

England and Wales compulsory liquidations, CVLs and administrations are seasonally adjusted (CVAs and receiverships are not, because volumes are too low); Scotland and Northern Ireland are not, and each nation has its own insolvency law. Industry counts are partly driven by how many companies each industry has on the register, so they do not show which sector is riskier, and the industry shares are of cases where an industry was recorded. Procedure shares marked calculated are our own arithmetic on the published counts.
